The Rise of Young Thug

The Rise of Young Thug

Some think that Young Thugs elastic, start-stop flow and roaming, stream-of-conscious lyrics make him future of rap, while others question hes merely a Lil Wayne clone given way too much hype. Make up your mind via this excellent overview from Beats Neil Martinez-Belkin, which features early hits and guest appearances.

Intro to the XX

XX only have two albums, so picking out a best-of is a little bit ancillary at this point, but its still great to hear all of the hits. This is particularly revealing when listened to side to side with Jamie XXs latest album, In Colour . His latest marks a dramatic aesthetic leap forward, and it will be interesting to hear what happens when the group reconvenes for their third album.

Panorama Bar Tracks For Your Sunrise Set

This playlist from Beatport imagines the perfect 10 tracks for a sunrise set at Berlins legendary Panorama bar. As you can imagine, these tracks are bright, anthematic excursions into deep house, nu-disco and funky house, and include Omar S, Pépé Bradock and Todd Terje.

Tropical House

Tropical House

Tropical House isnt the type of music youd normally find here, but its the middle of summer and its hot, even in San Francisco. This is definitely an adjective micro-genre, meaning that the terms tropical suggests steel drums, relaxed beats and liberal horns, and the genres best producers (including the Norwegian Matoma) are all to happy to accommodate. And it works, for the most part. This was culled from EDM Charts, a service-agnostic microsite that serves as a home to the content farmers at @lastrecords, who are owned by Beatframe, a tech-focused campaign/career management company. I think I got that right. Anyway, its a cool model.

Indietronica Classics

Indietronica Classics

In his intro for the "article," FACT editor-in-chief Joe Muggs makes an interesting distinction:

Well Indietronica, very pleasantly, isn’t really “a thing”. It’s not a scene, it’s not something with clubs or events dedicated to it, it’s not a marketing bracket or a pseudoacademic category, it’s never anything that people would think to say they’re into. It sometimes feels more an agglomeration of things that have fallen between the cracks of cool, an ad-hoc arrangement of dweebs, dorks and hobbyists all finding quiet corners of the music world where they can get on with their own tinkerings unmolested.

To an extent, "Indietronica" is a catch-all for both electronic music tracks with pop song structures, and, conversely, for indie pop tracks with electronic embellishments, both of which are made by musicians who are largely not within mainstream culture, but its a bit of a critical crutch that this list defines too broadly. Hot Chip and even Caribou definitely fit the mold, as where theres a lot more going on in tracks by clOUDDEAD or Sampha than just Indietronica. The latter belongs in the same electronic singer-songwriter tradition as James Blake (whose also included on the list), while cLOUDDEAD fall into the experimental hip-hop camp. Of course, you could also make the case that the point of bands are to resist easily classification altogether. Regardless, this is a really enjoyable and cohesive set of tracks.

Guest List: Miguel

Guest List: Miguel

In terms of persona, Miguels is poised somewhere between Frank Oceans headcase auteur and Lana Del Reys sun-damaged SoCAl rock-star shtick. Its a bit strained, and his deceleration on Wildheart that hes "speeding through all those red lights...dreaming of a beautiful exit" ("a beautiful exit") or his desire to "fuck like were filming in the valley" ("the valley") feel a little edgy-by-the-numbers, but he generally has a great ears for songs ("coffee") that complement his airy falsetto, and he seems to understand how to reconcile his R&B roots with his more the more experimental sonic motifs of future soul. This playlist, part of Apples ongoing "guests" series, looks his guest appearances. Its great to hear the early collaborations with aughts LA indie rapper Blu.

Duke Dumont presents: Sounds of Blasé Boys

Duke Dumont presents: Sounds of Blasé Boys

Im always surprised that Duke Dumont has been able to cross over to America to the extent that he has. The UK producer was mentored by Switch, and came up with post-house UK producers like Oliver Dollar and Route 94.His music is great. Its lite, melodic and floating electronic pop, with maybe a little bit of camp thrown in. Its late-afternoon festival music. This is a great mix of his Blasé Boys crew, though it strangely spends the first four tracks on Aki. Duke has one of the most active Spotify accounts though, and its worth a look to check out all his playlists.

Top 100 EDM Anthems

Top 100 EDM Anthems

Ill admit to not having a great critical perspective on EDM as well as being a bit late to the party. Rarely has popular music pushed the aesthetic boundaries of any particular genre, but this seems particularly true with EDM. Most of the pop crossover hits are riddled with cliches, and lack nuance, and most producers dont handle vocals very well, especially with female singers. With all that said, there are still some very amazing tracks on Spins generally awesome top 100 EDM list. The Chainsmokers, Audien, Gesaffelstein, Duck Sauce, Disclosure, and TNGHT tracks are all in my personal cannon (though Id argue that most of those arent what I think are EDM). I was a bit surprised by the lack of recent tracks on this list. I believe theres only one post-2013 track in the top 20. Maybe Spin thinks that EDMs glory days are behind it?

The 10 Best Proto-Grime Tracks

This one looks at the 10 best "proto grime" tracks. Theyve tapped DJ Logan Sama, who has been connected to the grime and underground hip-hop and electronic scenes in the UK for the past decade.
